TruEra is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the United States Air Force through the AFWERX innovation program. This contract reinforces TruEra’s leadership position in AI Quality management and the responsible and ethical adoption of AI.
USAF AI and ML use cases
To remain competitive, the Air Force is focused on leveraging a broad ecosystem of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Sample use cases include:
- Predictive Maintenance
- Logistical Support
- Pilot Training
- Smart Maps
- Space Situational Awareness
- Intelligence/Recon Cell collaboration
The challenge of getting past the AI Chasm
Moving AI models from development to the field is often challenging. Key stakeholders may not have adequate trust inthe model, due to models whose function cannot be sufficiently explained. Also, there might be a lack of robust performance metrics to provide assurances that the model will likely work as intended. As a result, while many models are developed, few actually make it to production. Gartner estimates that only roughly 13% ever make it to real world deployment. This gap is known as the “AI Chasm” and represents a frustrating and expensive hurdle to AI and ML success.
Monitoring models in the field to ensure ongoing success
Once models do make it to use in the field, it is critical that they continue to operate at optimal effectiveness. Degradation in accuracy or other aspects of model performance can have huge implications on outcomes. So having a continuous monitoring capability that alerts ML Ops engineers and data scientists to relevant issues, as well as points to the root causes of those issues, is fundamental to continued operational success.
TruEra: Crossing the AI chasm and ensuring mission success
TruEra provides the capabilities to comprehensively explain, evaluate, and monitor models throughout the full model lifecycle, from initial development to real world use.
TruEra Diagnostics and TruEra Monitoring support a broad range of model types and can be deployed in diverse environments including cloud, hybrid, air-gapped, and high-side. TruEra is leveraging its success in the commercial sector to help the DoD with their various AI Quality initiatives that are aligned with information requested by the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and Tradewind.
TruEra was recently named to Fast Company’s Annual List of the ”Worlds-Most-Innovative-Companies” for 2021 and named a ”Cool-Vendor” by Gartner, TruEra has also Open Sourced ”TruLens,” which provides Neural Network Explainability for ML Models.
AFWERX, innovation program for the AFRL
AFWERX, a program office at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), connects innovators across government, industry and academia. AFWERX achieves its goals through innovation and collaboration with the nation’s top subject-matter experts; harnessing the power of ingenuity of internal talent; and by expanding technology, talent, and transition partnerships for rapid and affordable commercial and military capability.
Organizationally, AFWERX has three efforts: AFVentures, Spark, and Prime. TruEra is working with AFVentures, which is all about tapping both U.S. and global tech ecosystems, using military problems to accelerate commercial technologies. AFWERX is transforming the Air and Space Force into an early-stage “investor” that leverages private capital, accelerates commercialization using military missions, and grows the number of partner companies.
